چکیده

The late growth stages and the post-growth diffusion of crystalline organic thin films have been investigated for 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(111), a model system in organic epitaxy. In situ Xray measurements at the anti-Bragg point during the growth show intensity oscillations followed by a time-independent intensity which is independent of the growth temperature. At T J 350K, the intensity increases after growth up to a temperature-dependent saturation value due to a post-growth diffusion process. The time-independent intensity and the subsequent intensity recovery have been reproduced by models based on the morphology change as a function of the growth temperature. The morphology found after the post-growth diffusion processes has been studied by specular rod measurements. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

From Initial to Late Stages of Epitaxial Thin Film Growth: STM Analysis and Atomistic or CoarseGrained Modeling

Epitaxial thin film growth by vapor deposition or molecular beam epitaxy under ultra‐high vacuum conditions generally occurs in two stages: (i) nucleation and growth of well‐separated islands on the substrate; (ii) subsequent formation of a thicker continuous film with possible kinetic roughening. For homoepitaxial growth, two‐dimensional (2D) monolayer islands are formed during submonolayer de...

Direct observation of epitaxial organic film growth: temperature-dependent growth mechanisms and metastability.

The growth of the first ten layers of organic thin films on a smooth metallic substrate has been investigated in real-time using the model system PTCDA on Ag(111). The complex behaviour is comprehensively studied by electron microscopy, spectroscopy and diffraction in a combined PEEM/LEEM instrument revealing several new phenomena and yielding a consistent picture of this layer growth. PTCDA gr...

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Studies of Cluster Diffusion in a Highly Mismatched System: Copper on Silver(111)

I have used low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate cluster diffusion phenomena in both the early stages of nucleation and growth and the late stages for a highly mismatched system, Cu on Ag(111). In particular, activation energies and prefactors for cluster diffusion are measured directly by tracking cluster motion with atomic precision at multiple temperatures to determin...
